Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Project applications close 15 May 2019.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

Follow your heart, not the herd

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Primary Gymnastics Program

We welcome Adrien from Tri Skills Gymnastics to our school, all the way from Sydney. Adrian has brought a huge amount of equipment including vaults, bars, trampolines and beams to engage the students in a range of Gymnastic activities. These have including jumping, swinging, bouncing and rolling. As one child said “that was the best ever”.

Recognition for Life Membership of Nevertire Warren Teachers Federation

A Day in Sydney for Our Captains

Our school Captains, Emma Bermingham and Hamish Callander, travelled to Sydney yesterday to visit Parliament House and Government House, meeting with Governor of New South Wales His Excellency David Hurley and had a fantastic day.

Unfortunately, His Excellency preferred to not take individual photos with students, however, our captains engaged in a robust discussion with him around lowering the voting age, the republic issue and problems racing rural NSW. A particular highlight was looking at some of the historical portraits and décor within Government House.

Paddy Ends His Trip to Sydney on a High Note

What a fantastic experience! I was selected to travel to Sydney with the Moorambilla Choir and Director Michelle Leonard.

We stayed at Royal Far West across the from the beach at Manly. Every morning we went over to the beach and sat on the wall. We also practised singing at the University Hall, which was a least 200 years old.

The song we sang at the ICC in Sydney was about the Brewarrina Fish Traps, the oldest structure built by man. We were lucky enough to be performing at TEDx in front of an audience of about eight thousand. We were given shirts to wear that said we performed at TEDx in Sydney 2018. It was unbelievable singing in front of so many people and very nerve wracking. My stomach was turning over and over before we went on stage. Everyone clapped and clapped us and they were all impressed.

Another favourite part was going over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, how awesome and we also saw some of Vivid Sydney. It was really cool because it looked like there was a giant 3D spider attacking the Opera House.

I had a terrific time and would like to thank Michelle Leonard and the Moorambilla team as well as parents for allowing me to take part in such an incredible experience.

On 25 May Warren Central School squash team Jack, Hamish, John and Braith who were victorious against Dunedoo Central, Forbes High and Canowindra High. The team will play Kirrawee High in the state rounds.

That makes the squash team Western Region Champions for the second year running! Well done boys.

Bus for Students

School Administrative Manager Ms Roz Hunt, Chairperson of the Warren Macquarie Local Aboriginal Land Council Mr George Riley, Principal Mr Duncan Lovelock and P&C President Mrs Ros Jackson.

Warren Central School was more than fortunate recently when the Warren Macquarie Local Aboriginal Lands Council (WMLALC) made a huge donation of their Ford Transit 12 seater bus to the school.

This will enable the school to take small groups on excursions and sporting trips with a teacher at the helm.

The WMLALC decided Warren Central School was a worthy recipient, as we were the most frequent hirer of the bus over the years.

The bus has been busy already with trips recently to Blayney for table tennis, Dubbo for Under 16s and Opens Touch Teams on separate days.

Once again, the staff and students of Warren Central School would like to sing the praises of the WMLALC for their kind and most generous donation. Thank you very much.

Dubbo Eisteddfod

On 31 May 35 students, making up two choirs from Warren Central School, competed in the 2018 Dubbo Eisteddfod directed by Mrs Frances Evans and accompanied by Mr Phil Leman and Ms Lyndal Elder.

The competition was hot with over seven other choirs competing.

Warren Central School Year 5-6 Eucalypt was awarded a Highly Commended following their outstanding performance of Waltzing Matilda and 'Siyahumba'. The Year 3-6 Vocal Ensemble performed 'The Last Anzac' and 'Lean on Me' with great commitment and energy. The adjudicator was very complimentary of the students ability to focus and watch their conductor. Both choirs blended their voices to create a warm and pleasant tone and their intonation was accurate.

The accompanying teachers and assistant, Mrs Trish Smith, were extremely proud of the students behaviour. They were supportive and encouraging of other choirs and felt inspired to continue to work together.

Narromine Public Speaking Competition

Four students participated in this competition on Tuesday 22 May at Narromine Council Chambers. All students spoke extremely well, putting their arguments forward in an entertaining and explicit manner.

Jorja Sinclair, Year 7, travelled to Narromine on 22 May to participate in the CWA Far Western Group Public Speaking contest.

Jorja was one of ten others in her category who spoke on a variety of topics before an audience of their peers, adjudicators and parents. Jorja received a highly commended certificate for her speech on 'SPEAKING UP'. She chose to speak about bullying, a topic that touches on all teenagers' lives but especially in this age of social media.

Jorja said "It was a very good experience".

'It really boosts your confidence, standing in front of people and speaking. I would recommend that all teenagers give it a go.'

Well done to Jorja for representing the school and being brave enough to speak in a public forum. Jorja will now speak on Tuesday 19 June at Molong Central. We wish her all the best.

Mason Wilson - Winner

Mason Wilson won the Easter colouring competition at Warren earlier this year. Mason's colouring went to state competition and he was announced the state winner for the Easter colouring competition.

Mrs Merryn Quigley had great joy announcing Mason Wilson the winner at the K-6 assembly. The competition is open to all NSW school students of both private and public schools.

Mason received a $50 store credit at Grinrod's Newsagency, a Faber-Castell 80 Connector pen gift case and a colour wheel valued at $37.95.

The nominated school of the state winner also receives a $250.00 store credit in the Newspower store where the winning entry was lodged and also receive a Faber-Castell 60 Watercolour Pencil Gift Tin and Colour Wheel valued at $55.00.

Mason also won the literacy section at the Warren Show, he became the champion for this section.

A huge congratulations to Mason Wilson, Warren Central School are proud to acknowledge such a wonderful effort.

Mrs Ridley is retireing, after 34 years at WCS

The first day of term 1 was 'officially' Mrs Judy Ridley's last day of employment at Warren Central School. Mrs Ridley's association with the school has been a long one. She first came to the school as a student and hasn't really left. Her involvement continued as a parent when Nigel and Brooke attended the school since 1984 as a school assistant mainly in the school library since 1988.

Judy has put her heart and soul into Warren Central School nurturing, supporting and encouraging both students and staff alike. The saying, 'actions speak louder than words' is certainly true in Judy's case.

She will be dearly missed and we hope she is able to make some time in her busy retirement schedule to continue her involvement as a guest and supporter of the school for many years to come.

Emma Bermingham Victor Chang Award Recipient

Emma Bermingham stood as a proud representative of Warren Central School at Dubbo College Senior Campus as one of the recipients of the Victor Chang Awards on 22 November 2017.

The reward recognises excellence in Science and achievements by a Year 11 student. The celebration highlighted the partnership between the NSW Department of Education and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.

Emma was nominated by her teachers as a diligent and respectful student with an aspiring career in a Science related field. Emma anticipates a career in the fields of Psychology and Nursing.

She was accompanied by her mum Cheryl Bermingham and Mr Selween Chandra.

The event is gaining a wider recognition with representation from 28 students from other schools around the Central West Region.

The like-minded students were driven by motivation to learn, all had goals to strive for success and were passionate about Science.

The Victor Chang Award is in honour of Dr Victor Chang who was a Chinese-Australian cardiac surgeon and a pioneer of modern heart transplantation.

150 Years Sports Day

Sports day held on Friday 17 November for the students celebrating 150 Years of Public Education at WCS.

Secondary: Played netball with mixed teams from the community, students and teachers.

Primary: Played games, tunnel ball, hopscotch, skipping and shooting the ball.

Lunch was provided with a hotdog, a can of soft drink and ice cream with topping.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day. Many thanks to the 150 Years committee for organising a wonderful day at WCS.

Agri-Robotics Day

Robotics has been an integral part of the advances in technology that has made significant impact in medicine engineering and agriculture with huge advantages over performing tasks manually.

On 19 October, 14 students from Year 8,9 and 10 participated in the Agri-Robotics day organised by the University of Sydney. This event was significant for the students as they used computer programming and coding for the first time to instruct the robot to perform simple tasks.

The University of Sydney program was being made into a documentary by ABC Catalyst to look at the impact of technology in Agriculture practices in the near future.

Mrs Westgarth is easily the most hard working teacher I have ever had the privilege of knowing . I was lucky enough to have her for Kindergarten, year 5 & 6 and to this day I know her passion for educating and challenging students had an incredible impact on my life. She worked tirelessly to ensure her students were continually supported in their strengths as well as dreams and always brought out the best in those she taught. She encouraged me to dream big, and was just as much a role model and a mentor as she was a fantastic teacher. Throughout my schooling life and beyond, I look back to the incredible support and encouragement she gave me because it helps every time. Her farewell message to me, "Shoot for the stars. 150 Years Celebration Assembly

150 Year Celebration Assembly held on Friday 27 October 2017. The beginning of the 150 Year celebrations began with visitors and special guests ex principal Mr David Maher 1964-1966.

Secondary Students performed with the WCS War Cry 1965. Cutting of the cake from the oldest WCS member of the community Mrs Norma Dowton, the eldest WCS student Jack Taylor and the youngest student Bonnie Couley. A finale with primary students dancing to 'Better When I'm Dancing'.

Afternoon tea was provided at the Hospitality Training Centre Bistro, followed by school tours.

Year 12 have their final days at Warren Central School this week. Monday 18 September is their Year 12 formal at the RSL beginning at 6pm.

The final assembly for Year 12 will be on Wednesday 20 September at 10.10am in the J.B.Renshaw Auditorium at school.

The group of students have been characterised by the closeness and willingness to support each other throughout the year.

They should be all proud of the contribution they have made to the school and community. We are all supporting our Year 12 well in their HSC exams and wish them every success in the future.

The Ridley/Trudgett Netball Gala Day was held at Victoria Oval on Thursday 10 August. We were fortunate enough to have 3 teams into the gala day this year. The 5/6 division 1 team played brilliantly all day, winning about half of their games. The 5/6 division 2 team were runners up, coming in close with a count back. It was a wonderful to see students on the team who have never played netball before play absolutely wonderful. The 3/4 team were undefeated and won their division. Congratulations to all these students who displayed sportsmanship throughout the day and enjoyed playing netball. Thank you to Mrs Higgins and Mrs Perry who gave their time at lunch to train these teams and for the organisation to get these teams to the gala day.

Coonabarabran Siding Springs Observatory Visit

As part of the national Science Week, Cuberider in association with Australian National University (ANU) hosted a free one day event at Siding Springs Observatory in Coonabarabran on 17 August for students in years 7-10.

Warren Central School students were quick to take this opportunity to be part of an exciting and collaborative "one of its kind: excursion, promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) with other schools from around the region.

Relieving Principal Appointed

Mr Bryce O'Connor has been appointed as the relieving Principal of Warren Central School from 29 May 2017 to the end of the school year. Mr O'Connor will be replacing Mr Lovelock while Mr Lovelock fills a regional Department of Education position - Principal Leader Schools Deployment - LMBR, which is the new financial and student administration being implemented into all public schools in NSW.

Mr Lovelock will return next year as Principal for Warren Central School 2018.

Police Youth Liaison Officer (PYLO) Visit

Last week the Police Youth Liaison Officer Senior Constable Craig Skein visited WSC with Nick from Headspace to discuss issues at school and safety with the internet and road rules.

Primary students were spoken to about the safety of bikes on the road and safety, regarding helmets, crossings and using paths.

High School students were given important information about cyber bullying and mobile phones. Cyber safety and using your images safe. Craig also discussed unsafe partying practice and being responsible road users.

Nick from Headspace discussed with the students about the services available at Dubbo.

The students enjoyed their day with Constable Craig Skein and Nick from Headspace a very informative day.

The P&C are currently replenishing their very diminished stock of winter sweatshirts, however due to a change in supplier, unfortunately the process is taking a lot longer than they would have hoped.

They are very aware of the urgent need for jumpers as the cooler weather sets in, and thank you for your patience. The volunteers in the P&C are working very hard with the supplier to hurry the process along as much as they can. As soon as the order is received they will let everyone know as a matter of priority.

Warren Central School student, Emily Glover joining the executive of the Department of Education for two days this week was a real revelation.

Year 11 student, Emily took over the desk of Executive Director, Learning Management and Business Reform as part of the annual Education Week Secretary for a Day leadership initiative.

"It was an eye opening experience," Emily said.

"I've made a lot of friends and learnt a lot about the Department of Education that I'll take back to my school."

Emily joined 19 other promising young leaders from around the state, who shadowed the Secretary, Dr Michele Bruniges AM and other senior officers.

The Secretary for a Day program is a core component of Education Week 2015.

It is a rewarding opportunity providing talented students first-hand experience of what is involved working as a senior manager in a large government organisation like the Department of Education.

The program offers the student Secretary for a Day an insight into the challenges and rewards of the post as well as how educational policy relates to schools.

Emily was chosen on her principal's recommendation and a written application outlining her leadership experience, personal qualities, areas of interest and what she hoped to learn.

Over the last two days as well as her time at the executive director's desk, she took part in meetings, forums and workshops at the Department of Education's Sydney offices.

Evacuation Drill Testing

After the successful trial of the evacuation signals last week, there will be a trial evacuation at some point during this week. (22 June - 26 June)

Unlike last week, the noise will sound for longer (around 2-3 minutes) and will once again be loud.

As part of WH&S legislation and policies, we must run evacuation drills to ensure compliance and effective responses to any possible cause that may lead to an evacuation.

Emergency Evacuation System - Testing

Warren's Chronically Ill Children Fund Receives Donation

The Secondary School's Student Representative Council made a welcome donation to Warren's fund for chronically ill children at last week's Presentation Night.

The fund was started a number of years ago to assist families of chronically ill local children with the often significant costs associated with medical care.

Mayor Rex Wilson received the donation on behalf of Warren Shire who manage the fund.

Captains are Maya Barclay and Sophie Hopkin. Prefects are Haylie Hammond, Mackenzie Pardy, Chelsey Hewett and Katherine Owens. All will be inducted and presented with their badges at the school's end of year presentation night on the 11 December.

Did you know that Warren Central School offers adults the opportunity to take part in a range of classes?

People enrol in classes for a range of reasons - an interest, to learn new skills, to improve employment prospects or simply because it was a subject they wish they'd had the opportunity to do when they were at school.

Course offerings in 2015 will depend on demand but at this stage there is:

Hospitality (day class)

Computing Applications (night class)

Adult Literacy/Numeracy (day class)

Most classes run for two years and no prior experience is required. Even better, there is no tuition or enrolment charge although there is a charge for the material/equipment that is used in some of the subjects. Some of the subjects require special clothing to be worn.

The focus of the day was 'student voice', providing students with the opportunity to develop their problem solving and leadership skills and strategies.

Dancing improves strength, flexibility and stamina but students taking part in weekly dance classes are finding it offers unexpected benefits.

Local dance teacher Kirby McCutcheon is running extra-curricular hip hop classes this term.

"I'm sure the girls expected to be improving their physical fitness but dance is also a fantastic creative outlet for them. I can see the girls growing in self confidence as they become more at ease expressing themselves through movement and contributing their own ideas for choreography," says Kirby.

NAIDOC Day at WCS

NAIDOC celebrations were held at Warren Central today, providing the opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

The welcome assembly drew attention to the theme for this year's celebrations which was to honour all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have fought in defence of country; whether it be the warriors in the Frontier Wars to those who have served in Australia's military conflicts and engagements across the globe.

Connect to Reading - Book Week 2014

Book Week was celebrated in schools and libraries throughout Australia last week.

At Warren Central School the week of activities included competitions and lunch time stories and culminated with the annual book character parade and assembly on Thursday.

As the students filed through the school gates in the morning there were squeals of delight as they greeted friends and tried to guess who each was dressed up as.

Staff shared in the excitement of the day, also dressing in character and for some there was perhaps a nostalgic thought or two about their own school day character parades. For Year 1 / 2 teacher Miss Elizabeth Drenkhahn, it was a special event; her first Book Week as a teacher and an opportunity to pull out of the cupboard the feathered Edwina the Emu creation her mother had made for her when she was in Year 6.

Library staff Mrs Narelle Whittaker and Mrs Judy Ridley joined with Assistant Principal Ms Jo Reeves and Relieving Assistant Principal Mrs Lyn Westgarth to take up the Australia-wide theme of this year's Book Week which was "Connect to Reading". They came disguised as Lego people who needed connecting.

The much anticipated afternoon assembly entertained the appreciative audience of children, staff and guests and included class parades, the announcement of the Children's Book Council winners, poetry recitals and comedy skits.

After school the library beckoned and afternoon tea, a book fair and creative displays illustrating some of the books short listed for awards were enjoyed by all.

Daniel only just missed out on qualifying for the Combined High Schools state carnival in the 400m He was also competitive in a number of other events.

Abigail made it to State for the 100m and for the high jump. She was third in the 200m but her time was outside the qualifying time unfortunately.

It was a great day, enjoyed by all despite the bleak conditions and head wind down the straight.

Annabelle and Prue Secretaries for a Day

Annabelle Taylor and Prue Murray were flown to the Department of Education and Communities' head office in Sydney last week, joining eighteen other students from public secondary schools around NSW.

Our students were thrilled to be chosen to be part of the presigious "Secretary for a Day" program, an important part of the department's annual Education Week celebrations.

The girls spent an informative two days shadowing senior executives gaining first-hand experience of what is involved in running a NSW Government department. Prue with Grey Pryor, Deputy Secretary, and Annabelle with Cheryl Best, Executive Director, Learning and Business Systems.

Promoting awareness and education about ear health

Warren Central School hosted ear health awareness and education sessions for students from Warren Central, St Mary's Catholic School and the Warren Preschool last week.

Running the sessions were Rachel Mills and Donna Rees of the DEC Hearing Support Unit who are also co-ordinators of the Hear our Heart Ear Bus Project. They brought with them little friends Snotty Sam and Lucy to teach the children about the 'Breath, Blow, Cough, Wash and Chew Program'.

Building on their already outstanding reputation for events catering, Warren Central School students have been working hard again in the community, most recently preparing and serving dinner for the Silver City Bush Treadlers' send-off dinner.

As always Ms Rice and Mrs Mayger volunteered their time to assist our young team of caterers on the night and were pleased to receive many compliments from the cyclists as well as from our Mayor, Rex Wilson, who also praised the students in his column in the Warren Weekly.

Music in the Wind

The wind quintent, "The Chambermaids", visited as part of the Musica Viva music in schools program this week.

Students learnt how the french horn, flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoon work; how music can tell stories and even how to make their own back yard french horn with the help of a bit of garden hose, a tap fitting and funnel!

The classically trained professional musicians all work regularly with Australia's various symphony orchestras, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and other chamber ensembles but come together as "The Chambermaids" to foster a love and appreciation of live music in schools throughout Australia.

Abigail to speak at Parliament House, NSW

Year 8 student Abigail Irving is off to Parliament House NSW!

Ten competitors from all over Western NSW, from both state and independent schools, competed in the NSW Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award Western NSW Final held at Narromine High School this week and Abigail took out first place.

The students, aged between twelve and fourteen years, had to preapre and deliver a five minute speech on any subject. Abigail's chosen topic was "We Live in a Global Village". The students were also required to give a two minute impromptu speech with only five minutes' preparation time.

The standard was very high but Abigail's previous public speaking experience with the CWA and Dubbo Eisteddfods, speech and drama lessons with Mrs Marcia Macmillan and support from teachers Ms Rush and Mrs Smith held her in good stead.

Abigail will now attend the state semi finals on Friday 12 September at Parliament House, NSW.

State Netball Carnival in sight

The Warren Central School Open Netball team played brilliant netball to win the open division Western Region Central School's Netball Carnival last week Dubbo.

"Our girls worked like a finely oiled machine; they were just so smooth," said an excited coach Gaye Rush.

After three convincing wins the girls went up against Barradine Central School. In what was a nail-biting final the two teams went goal for goal for the majority of the game. In the end though, sheer determination pulled the girls through, with a four goal lead.

"It was a great display of fast, slick netball and quite a number of schools' players and coaches stayed on to watch," said Gaye.

The Central Schools State Final title is now in the girls' sight and they will be counting down till August 22^nd when winners from the southern, northern and western regions of the state will meet in Dubbo.

Also representing Warren Central at the carnival was the Under 16's team and although less experienced these girls came a credible third out of nine teams. The girls played some very polished netball, winning their first three games. This qualified them for the semi-finals where they came up against the older and more experienced Dunedoo Central team. It was a predictably tough came, pushing the Warren girls to the limit however the Dunedoo side came out the winners.

Coach Gaye Rush complimented all the girls who participated in the two day carnival. "They showed exceptional team work and team spirit and conducted themselves in a manner in which I was proud."

PBL no "band" aid for our school

84 students had received a yellow band as at late last week. Since the introduction of the PBL band system, day one this term, we have seen an increase in positive behaviours displayed throughout our school by our students.

The students are rewarded under the three PBL focus areas; Respectful, Responsible Learners by means of a teal band. Students acrew these bands for displaying positive behaviours during school.

Students trade three teal bands for a pink band; three pink bands for a purple band, three purple bands for a yellow band. A yellow band entitles students to participation in a morning tea with the deputy.

A huge congratulations to all of our students for embracing the PBL band system and continuing to display our "Respectful, Responsible Learners" qualities.

A visit from Indonesia

Wayang Kulit, or shadow puppet theatre, is considered a vital part of Indonesian cultural heritage and many visitors to Bali look forward to attending a performance.

It's an ancient entertainment and art form thought to have existed in Indonesia for at least eight hundred years and last week students students from primary and secondary were privileged to have a master puppeteer or dalang, named Sumandi, bring the traditional performance to them.

Although shadow puppetry is not specific to Indonesia, it is of huge significance to the people; depicting stories drawn from classic Hindu epics and seeking to have a moral and spiritual influence on them. Dalangs are highly respected and Sumandi explained he had been learning and practising his craft, which includes making the puppets, since he was eleven.

The students sat on either side of the screen, rotating half way through the show providing them the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes. Afterwards Sumandi answered questions and to the amazement of the students revealed that in Indonesia a show would normally start at 9pm and last till dawn with no breaks; a feat of extreme mental and physical endurance!

Students meet the Minister

Warren Central School Secondary Captain Meg Callander and Vice Captain Nathan Clarke joined other school leaders from around the Barwon electorate in Sydney recently to find out about the workings of Parliament and the role of the NSW Governor.

The day began at Parliament House on Macquarie Street where the Nationals MP for Barwon, Kevin Humphries, just weeks into his new portfolio of Natural Resources, Water and Lands, was on hand to welcome and address the students. Following this the students proceeded on to visit the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council Chambers.

After lunch it was a short walk over to Government House where students enjoyed a tour of the grand building and gardens and later met with Her Excellency , Professor Marie Bashir, AC, CVO, Governor of New South Wales.

A little bit of sight seeing including a photo opportunity with Natalie Barr of the morning show Sunrise, rounded out the day nicely for Meg, Nathan and Principal William White.

Cup cakes for a cause

Students were all smiles after making their purchases from the cup cake stall held at Warren Central last week.

Prefects and a number of staff cooked and decorated cakes to raise money for Stewart House, a student support facility in Curl Curl, Sydney, where around 1800 selected children visit each year for short term, respite care.

Whilst at Stewart House students can receive free eye, dental and health screening and treatment as well as attend health and educational programs to boost self-esteem and promote healthy lifestyles. They also attend an onsite school.

Teachers, staff and students in the NSW public education system have been significant fundraisers for Stewart House since its inception in 1931.

A visit from Football NSW

Representatives from Football NSW spent a morning working with primary school classes last week.

Robert Fitzgerald, the Coaching and Development Manager, Western Branch, and Andrew Fernley, Community Game Development Officer, ran students through skills development sessions and mini games, hoping to promote football as a sport to the young girls and boys.

Hands-On Science

A number of primary and secondary students had the opportunity to work on exciting hands-on science and design projects recently.

A visit by the industrial design team Maker Machine brought an up close encounter with a 3D printer to students in years 5 and 6. They also took part in a rapid design workshop which had them involved in the whole design process from generating ideas to creating a prototype.

During the same week keen secondary science students visited the annual University of Newcastle Science and Engineering Challenge in Dubbo where they spent a day immersed in scientific challenges and problem solving.

Swimmers off to State

Secondary students Matthew, Joseph and Brittany Marks have been selected in the Western Region team to compete at the Combined High Schools State Swimming Championships in early April.

At the recent Western Region Carnival, the precursor to the State Carnival, Matthew came first in the 15 years backstroke, Joseph third in the 14 years 200m freestyle, third in the 100m backstroke and 2nd in the 100m breast stroke.

Brittany was third in the 12 year old 100m breast stroke. Congratulations on achieving such a high level. Your hard work is a credit to you all.

Students immerse themselves in music

With a program that included the dance-pop hit "Moves Like Jagger" , the flamboyant 70's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the more usual concert band repertoire, there was plenty to challenge participants at the recent Western Region Band Camp.

Three of our secondary students, Courtney Graham (year 7), Emily Smith (year 8) and Abigail Irving (year 8) were selected to take part in this year's camp at Lake Burrendong, joining students from twenty-four other schools including Orange High School, Lithgow High School, Dubbo College Senior Campus and Mudgee High School.

The annual camp provides an opportunity for public school music students from years 5 to 12 to enrich their musical knowledge with expert tutors visiting from Sydney. Students worked solidly for five hours a day over six days, learning ten pieces. Abigail also participated in the advanced band group, requiring a further hour's practice after dinner each day.

It wasn't all hard work though, with swimming pool games, slip and slide, rock climbing and archery on offer by day and theatre sports, a Dance Party, Mini Olympics and Wacky Races by night.

By the end of the week the keen young musicians had combined to make an amazing orchestral sound which they proudly showcased at a special concert for parents and other family members.

Students are also able to make their own blogs to display their work digitally. All comments and posts are moderated by the blog owner (a staff member) before they can be published on a blogED site.

Fishing Club Enjoys Competition

We have some keen fishermen amongst us and they took on the challenge of the Macquarie River Fishing Classic at the weekend.

Mr Murray organised students to participate in an internal competition to run in conjunction with the town event. It was gratifying he said to see eleven students sign up and he was particularly impressed with the great sportsmanship on display. Apparently there was not one "tall fishing tale'!

"Moving forward I'd like to see the school's involvement continue," said Mr Murray. "The CEO of RiverSmart, Dr Bill Phillips, was certainly impressed with the model we used and expressed an interest in involving other river towns' schools in the future.

I was really pleased with the reception the students' involvement received and in fact, a number of representatives of local business houses and organisations indicated an interest in coming on board with us next year in different capacities, including as sponsors.

This year we were thrilled to have the support of Uncle Clarries who donated lures for prizes."

Prize winners in the school's own competition were: Biggest Cod - Tom Mitchell, Biggest Carp – Tom Fuller and Kyle McClenahan, Most Carp Caught – Louie Yilmaz, Nearest to the Mystery Length – Malik Girdler and Scott Sayers.

New Primary Captains and Prefects for 2014

Our captains will be Saranna Fisk and Ruth Cant.

First Aid Skills

These days it is not uncommon to find completion of a first aid course a requirement to work in particular industries.

Recognising this, the successful completion of a first aid course is a mandatory competency of all Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses in the NSW Higher School Certificate.

Students in Years 10 to 12 completed their course recently Assurance First Aid. A number of staff also took the opportunity to refresh their skills as is required by the Department of Education and Communities.

Work Experience

Our Year 10 students were out on work experience last week. A number of local businesses kindly allowed students to spend a week getting a feel for the world of work and a few students even travelled to businesses in Dubbo and Sydney.

Tennis in Tottenham

Our primary school tennis team won the day at the Gobondery/NARRAF tennis day held last Friday at the Tottenham tennis courts.

With the students putting in daily practice on the school courts since the beginning of the term, hopes were high on the way over to Tottenham that the magnificent trophy might be returned to our trophy cabinet this year.

Teams of eight students from Trangie, Tottenham, Tullamore and Warren Central played doubles and mixed doubles matches and by the halfway point the lead was shared by Warren and Tottenham. Some great work by all the students, in particular, Felix Weston, enabled the Warren team to pull ahead by the end of the day and emerge the winning school.

We'll all be thinking of Shyanne this Wednesday as she participates in the NSW Premier's Spelling Bee.

It will be a week of firsts for Shyanne: participating as a regional finalist in the State final; travelling in a plane and going to Sydney! It's sure to be memorable.

Shyanne is a great speller and we wish her all the best. This is the fourth time Warren Central has been represented in the State Final since the competition's inception in 2004.

Live Theatre Experience

A number of Warren Central School's secondary and Year 6 students were privileged to enjoy a special performance of the Warren Arts Council's visiting production, "Cut Snake" when it came to town last week.

"It was a wonderful opportunity to take young people to live theatre as it can be such an enriching and memorable experience. The versatility and energy of the actors who incorporated acrobatics, puppetry and cabaret really impressed everyone," commented English teacher Bernie Robson.

After the show the actors made time to run a workshop with the students which involved developing stories in small groups then melding threads from them into two plays which were presented at the conclusion of the afternoon.

Milo T20 Blasts into Town

Summer is nearly here and as the cricket season kicks off Cricket NSW is out and about encouraging school students to give the game a try.

Students from St Mary's and Warren Central met at Victoria Oval last week to take part in the Milo T20 Blast School Cup under the guidance of Cricket NSW representative Matthew Tabbernor.

The Milo T20 Blast program aims to replicate the excitement of the KFC T20 Big Bash League by modifying the standard cricket format and rules.

After starting the day with a variety of skill based activities including batting, catching, bowling and hand-eye co-ordination games the students broke into teams to play forty minute games in a round robin format. Years 3 and 4 students played six to a side with twelve overs a game and Years 5 and 6 students played eight to a side, sixteen overs per game.
At the end of the day each school received a participation certificate and all participating students received a bag from Cricket NSW containing cricket posters, arm bands and other goodies.
For any youngsters inspired to take up Saturday morning cricket it's not too late.Warren Junior Cricket's Saturday morning sessions are for anyone aged five to 12 years and new registrations are always welcome.Sessions are held from 9am to 11.30am at Victoria Oval. Year 12 Step out in Style

The Year 12 Formal was a very stylish and no doubt memorable event for our graduating Year 12 students. While the Formal is the event that everyone looks forward to on completing school, the students' last week was extremely busy as they finalised their fundraising activities for Royal Far West. It was a brilliant effort for such a small group with their final result nearly $4500! Well done Year 12, we're proud of you.

Public Speaking Success

The annual CWA Public Speaking Competition once again provided students with a valuable opportunity to learn and improve on their public speaking skills. We applaud all our our students who put up their hands to participate.

Congratulations to Year 7 student Abigail Irving for winning the secondary section and to Max Irving of Year 6 who placed second. Felix Weston, Year 6, and Ruth Cant, Year 5, also performed admirably and received Highly Commended awards.

State Spelling Bee Finalist

Warren Central has had success once again at the Western Region Premier's Spelling Bee Final.

Year 6 student Shyanne Buswell was the winner in the senior section (years 5 & 6), following in the footsteps of Olivia Hamblin (2007) and Arielle Irving (2009, 2011).

Shyanne will now compete against the winners from 42 other NSW regions at the State Final in Sydney on November 6. Good luck Shyanne and we are all very proud of your dedication to practising your spelling!

Shakira and Max through to State

It was an exciting day for Shakira Duncan and Max Irving at the Western Region Athletics Carnival last Friday.

The pair have made selection for the State Primary Schools Sports Association Athletics Carnival to be held at the Sydney Athletic Centre at Homebush in October.

Shakira competed in the 11 years shot put and discus, placing third in the discus. Max was placed third in the 12/13 years boys 800m. He also competed in the 100m race.

Also representing the Gobondery/NARRAF Zone at the carnival were Felix Weston (12-13 boys 800m and 12-13 boys high jump), Kyle McClenahan (12-13 years boys shot put and discus) and Charlotte Scotson (10 years girls 100m.)

Spellers head to Regional Finals

It's Premier's Spelling Bee time again and last Wednesday we held our school rounds to determine who would represent us at the Western Region Finals.

The Premier's Spelling Bee is an initiative of the Department of Education and Communities to motivate primary school aged students to develop their spelling. It is open to all NSW government primary, central and community schools. A winner and a runner-up are sent from each participating school to their regional final and from there winners compete at State level. Warren Central is proud to have been represented at the State Final three times since the competition's inception in 2004.

Congratulations to Charlotte Scotson, 1st, and Tyler Pratt, runner-up in the Year 3/4 Division. Shyanne Buswell placed first in the Year 5/6 Division with Felix Weston runner-up.

Outreach science

Warren Central students from years 3 to 6 headed to Nyngan last Thursday for a very busy day of environmental education activities.

Along with students from Nyngan, Hermidale, Marra Creek and Girilambone, the students took part in a range of activities that brought the topics of sustainable energy, biodiversity, riparian zones and macro-invertebrate studies to life. The sessions were facilitated by educators from four of the state's Environmental Education Centres who had travelled west as part of an Outback Outreach Program.

Read Across the Universe

We celebrated Book Week in style again this year.

The Children's Book Council theme for this year was "Read Across the Universe" and our library and library staff were transformed magnificently to fit the bill.

As always students leapt at the opportunity to come dressed as favourite book characters and enjoyed participating in the annual Book Week Assembly. There were class parades, prizes for Book Week competition winners and wonderful performances from our students.

After the assembly the rush was on to head to the library to show family members the decorated library, competition entries and of course to purchase books from the Book Fair.

Thank you to all the staff and students who worked to bring this much loved event to fruition. It really is a highlight of our year.

Thank you also to everyone who made a purchase or donated a book to the school at the Book Fair. We derive a percentage of all sales which goes back into purchasing more books for our library.

Visit from the Korean Mission for Indigenous Australia

The Australian Indigenous Ministries facilitated a visit from the Sydney based Korean Mission for Indigenous Australia recently.

Members of the mission feel an empathy for the challenges facing Indigenous Australians as historically the Korean people have suffered a loss of culture and struggle for emancipation as a nation. As Christians they believe that faith in Jesus Christ can change lives and want to share that message with joy and energy.

After hosting a bbq lunch the talented visitors entertained the students and staff with a dynamic performance of singing, dancing, drama and personal testimonies which were enthusiasticallly received.

The visitors commented at the end of the day that they were touched by the warmth of their welcome, from both students and staff.

NIDA Courses in Dubbo

The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) is Australia's leading institute for education and training in theatre, film and television.

In the next school hoidays NIDA Open will be running a range of short courses in Dubbo.

Education Week

Warren Central was open to family members last week to celebrate Education Week.

Students proudly showed family members their work and inside their classrooms. Primary school prefects took interested visitors on a tour of the school, including the new Hospitality Facility.

A picnic lunch in the sunshine was enjoyed by all followed by the Term 3 special awards assembly where the school choir entertained.

Life Education Visit

The Life Education Van recently paid us a visit. Primary students participated in a variety of age appropriate sessions.

Life Education is the largest non-government provider of health education to children and young people, Australia wide. Their mission is to empower children and young people to make informed choices for a safe and healthy life.

The cost of the visit was subsidised by a generous donation from the organisers of this year's Cotton Industry Golf Day.

Backyard League

A fun session learning rugby league skills and drills provided the perfect way for Warren Central students to warm up in last Friday's chilly conditions.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 7 took part in the first of three Backyard League sessions with Game Development Officer, Daniel Swan.

Developed by the National Rugby League (NRL), the program aims to teach the essential ‘game sense' skills through a modified, informal version of rugby league.

Lending a hand was our own Thomas Field. Thomas and his brother Craig were both part of the NSW Country Rugby League Under 18's team that played in New Zealand during the last school holidays.

More Public Speaking Success

Following on from her success at the CWA Narromine public speaking competition, Abigail participated in the CWA Inter Group Public Speaking Competition in Forbes.

Students from independent and public schools from the Central Western, Oxley and Far Western CWA Groups were in attendance where Abigail spoke on the topic: "Horizons".

Max qualifies for State Carnival

The cross country trials for students attending public schools in the Western Region were held at the Wellington Racecourse last week, with Max Irving gaining selection to head to the State Carnival at Eastern Creek Raceway on the 19th of July.

Heavy early morning rain made conditions on the track extremely wet and muddy, with more than a few injuries sustained by competitors on the day. Thankfully Warren Central students, Max, Charlotte Scotson and Felix Weston, competed their races without any mishaps.

Charlotte put in a great effort in her first time at the carnival, running in the 10 Years Girls 2km course. Felix and Max were neck and neck within the top ten for most of their 3km race for 12 and 13 year olds, with Max pulling away towards the end to move into sixth place and into a place on the Western Region team. Felix came in tenth, his best placing in any of the five carnivals he's attended.

Three of our students have secured a place in the Gobondery/NARRAF Cross team after competing at Yeoval last week.

Max Irving was 1st and Felix Weston second in the 12/13 Years Boys race and Charlotte Scotson was placed fifth in the 10 Years Girls race.

All three will now compete at the Western Region carnival on the 12th of June.

Abigail's Success

Year 7 student Abigail Irving was thrilled to win first place in the Narromine CWA Public Speaking Competition recently.

This was the first year an invitation to participate in the competition was extended to schools from outside Narromine and students from schools in Girilambone, Nyngan, Hermidale and Warren took up the valuable opportunity to develop their skills.

Our team consisted of Ruth Cant and Sarannah Fisk of Year 5 together with Emily Smith and Abigail of Year 7. Abigail's win puts her through to the CWA Interagency Public Speaking Competition in Forbes on the 18^th of June.

Abigail is seen here with the Platinum Premier's Reading Challenge certificate she received from our library staff for successfully completing the challenge for seven consecutive years.

On a recent excursion to Sydney our secondary captains had the opportunity to develop their knowledge of constitutional and parliamentiary proceedings and the role of the NSW Governor.

A visit to Parliament House included listening to several politicians talk about their roles and a tour of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.

Following this the captains visited Government House where they met with the Governor of New South Wales, Professor Marie Bashir, AC, CVO. In her speech to leaders from schools around the state, she spoke of the career of a Governor and the future of our nation which the girls reported was extremely educational and inspiring.

New Trade Training Centre Opens

Warren Central School's impressive new Trade Training Centre was opened last Friday with an official handover in the morning and staff and guests invited to an inspection after school.

Funded by the Federal Government's Trade Training Centres in Schools Program, the facility is a close to million dollar investment in training the school's current and future hospitality students. Training and assessment of commercial cookery and hospitality will now occur using the most up to date industry standard facilities.

School staff as well as special guests St Mary's Principal and the Warren Preschool Director, enjoyed the opportunity to look over the impressive new facility at the afternoon function. Students are having their first look this week.

The project was completed within budget and in just fourteen weeks. During the official opening our Principal, Mr William White, had nothing but praise for New England Constructions and in particular their local Site Manager, Mr Col Law.

"The project progressed extremely smoothly and the quality of work and consultation has been above and beyond expectations. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Col and his team," commented Mr White.

Representatives from NSW Public Works and NSW Department of Education and Communities (DEC) were also on hand and were similarly effusive in their praise. Mr Wade Greenwood, Regional Vocational Education Consultant, NSW DEC, added that it was one of the only a few Trade Training Centres in NSW to be completed ahead of schedule.

"The fantastic communication and the design ideas from Mrs Emma Rice, Hospitality Assistant Mrs Jenny Mayger and Mrs Robyn Taylor, (Head Teacher), enabled us to make savings through good design which we channelled back into the project, providing a number of extras, including the bistro area."

The fully furnished separate bistro area replicates a cafe setting and with a new Smartboard to be fitted soon, it will provide another conference space for the school.

All that remains now is for the magnificent new facility to be put to the test and with cooking for the Warren Show planned for next week and catering for the upcoming Warren Tennis Club Ball soon after, the results will soon be in.

ANZAC Day Commemorated

Students, staff and visitors joined together for a moving ANZAC Day service during the last week of Term 1. Adding to the service were the very special displays of photos and books about our war history, created by library staff.

On ANZAC Day itself, which fell during the school holidays, a number of our students and staff proudly marched in the town's annual parade to the cenotaph where wreaths were laid by our secondary and primary captains.

Moorambilla Choirs Try Outs

Warren Central students had the opportunity to try out for places in this year's Moorambilla children's choirs when Michelle Leonard, the Artistic Director of the multi award winning Moorambilla Festival, visited our school.

Interested students from St Mary's and Trangie Central were also in attendance.

A Coonamble girl originally, Michelle is now a much acclaimed choral director who has worked around the world. She created the annual Coonamble festival as a way of giving back to the western region by exposing its children to music training and making at a standard usually only accessible to children in large cities.

The children work with expert tutors and, as the festival always commissions original Australian music, they often have the privilege of meeting and working with the composers.

Says the esteemed Australian conductor Richard Gill, OAM; "Moorambilla Voices is a vital and specific program which nurtures the preservation of culture while encouraging the birth of new work. It is an unique project and one that should serve as a benchmark for communities nationwide. As Patron of Moorambilla Voices I commend her, her program and the concept wholeheartedly."

To be part of a Moorambilla choir is a memorable life experience. For those WCS students who are selected to take part, enjoy!

Swimmers head to State

Seven swimmers making it through to the State Championships is possibly a record for WCS!

Three students from secondary and four from primary have put in daily (and in some cases twice daily) training to make it to the Combined High Schools and Primary Schools Sports Association Championships to be held at Homebush just after Easter. Well done everyone and keep up the training for a few more weeks. We hope the Warren pool doesn't get too cold!

School Banking to Commence

The school banking system will commence from Tuesday 12 February.

Existing account holders should give their books and contributions to Mrs Ridley on Tuesdays. Anyone interested in joining the program needs to establish a Youth Saver account with the Commonwealth Bank. Once that is established students need only bring in their deposit book and contribution each Tuesday.

Remember, every deposit is rewarded with a token and once students arrive at ten token they will receive a prize!

Our school also benefits by receiving a commision on all donations.

Oxley Wins Swimming Carnival

Stephen Bignall has stepped into our newly created School Chaplain role.

This two day a week position has been created due to the expansion of the Federal Government's National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program.

Stephen is already familiar to staff and students as he has been working one day a week in the role of Special Religious Education teacher.

"My role will be one of encouraging helpful activity and good relationships, being there in times of grief and stress, trauma or trial. I will seek to gently assist and support school families as well as link them to appropriate support services. The chaplain is there for those of all faiths and belief and I welcome the opportunity to meet parents and guardians as well as to support staff members," said Stephen.

"As the parent of a Year 7 student in the region I can relate to the aspirations of parents and students and the experience of living in a rural setting."

The P&C has instigated a school banking programme in which all students from Kindergarten to Year 12 may participate.

The program aims to give students the opportunity to regularly save money; thereby teaching them the all important skills of money management and saving. This can empower them for financial success in the future.

Humming Birds Sing!

Musical a capella quartet, "The Humming Birds", wowed our students last Friday, showcasing the music making potential of four unaccompanied harmonising voices.

The female singing group was brought to the school by the Musica Viva in Schools program which has been touring live musical shows to schools throughout Australia since 1981.

Over the years our students have been exposed to a variety of musical genres including French Baroque, Latin American and Jazz to name a few. This time, the Hummingbirds delivered another absorbing performance, skilfully interpreting African American, lullabies, doo-wop and 1960's protest songs.

Commenting on the value of the program in the school, Assistant Principal Mrs Kim McArdle enthused, "We love Musica Viva because it exposes students to the richness of a professional musical experience without having to travel to a big centre which is where you'd normally have to go to see such high calibre performances. The children love getting involved with the show and I know the performers love being able to bring music to country kids."

Western NSW Culinary Challenge Winners

Working in a situation similar to the nerve wracking "pressure tests" of reality television show "Masterchef", our team in the Western NSW Culinary Challenge emerged the winners in a field comprising teams from public and independent schools from around the western region. Molly Gough, Prue Murray, Annabelle Taylor and Meg Callander were ecstatic with their win, as was their very proud Food Technology teacher, Ms Emma Rice.

The girls were required to present two dishes for judges to assess on the basis of taste, texture, creativity and presentation. Also closely examined were other criteria including logical workflow, time management, organisation, minimal wastage and correct methods of cookery.

It is a brilliant result from our girls and Ms Rice and reflects the high standards set in our Food Technology/Hospitality department.

Public Speaking Success

What a great achievement to see so many of our students take out places in the annual CWA Public Speaking Competition.

In the secondary section, Meg Callander was placed first, speaking on the Moorambilla Music Festival.

It was pleasing to see Meg continuing to "put herself out there", recognising how important it is to develop and refine public speaking skills. We are fortunate that the CWA organisation offers the students of Warren this valuable opportunity.

In the primary school section, 1st place went to Max Irving, 2nd place went to Abigail Irving, equal third place went to Felix Weston and Emily Smith.

Our students were also rewarded with two of the nine Highly Commended awards, those going to Courtney Graham and Savannah Nielsen.

Congratulations to these students and to all our students who participated. Public speaking is not something that comes naturally to many; that's why taking up opportunities to practise are important.

Abigail to Head to State Carnival

Congratulations to primary school captain Abigail Irving who will compete at the NSW PSSA Athletics Championships at Homebush in October.

Abigail competed in a number of events at the Western Primary Schools Sports Association Athletics Championships in Dubbo. It was her second placing in the Senior Girls High Jump that put her through to the next level.

TOM a Great Experience

Four hours a week of after school work, for six weeks, plus a Saturday, didn't faze the students who participated in the recent Tournament of Minds (TOM) final in Orange.

The competition is an inter-school educational program that develops students' higher order thinking, problem solving, team work, creativity and performance skills.

Emily Smith, Ruth Cant, Shakira Duncan, Abigail Irving, Savannah Nielsen, Max Irving, Felix Weston and Hamish Callander were enthusiastic participants in our school team, supported by Ms Reeves.

"The competition organisers send all the teams a list of Long Term Challenges from which to choose and the students worked studiously after school for six weeks to research, script and create costumes for their prepared response," said Ms Reeves.

On the day of the final the first challenge for the students was a previously unseen Spontaneous Challenge. With only ten minutes to think about their response the students were judged on their ability to think creatively on their feet and use good group co-operation skills.

Soon after this, the students enthusiastically delivered their Long Term Challenge response to a panel of judges and an audience.

"Our team came away with an Honours commendation and a really worthwhile educational experience. It was wonderful to see them developing skills that will be essential in their life in secondary school and beyond," commented Ms Reeves.

Families enjoy Mini Olympics

With Education Week falling during the Olympic Games this year, a Mini Olympics afternoon provided an entertaining way to celebrate both at Warren Central.

Following a family picnic and an "opening ceremony" the children participated as teams in a variety of games very loosely modelled on official Olympic competitions such as horse riding, cycling, coits, hurdles, basketball, gymnastics, swimming and hockey.

NAIDOC Day 2012

Every year NAIDOC celebrations are held across Australia to acknowledge the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Warren's celebrations were bigger than ever this year with a committee formed by Cindy Shepherd of McKillop Rural Community Services, Warren Central School's Alan Shepherd, Chris Crisp of Warren Preschool and Chris Letton of Womens' Health. Warren Shire Council and various town agencies also contributed to the day's success.

The theme chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee for this year's event was "Spirit of the Tent Embassy: 40 Years On" to commemorate what the Aboriginal tent embassy on the lawns of Parliament House represents.

For members of the community, visitors, students from Warren Central School and Warren Preschool, the day began at Victoria Oval with two enthralling Aboriginal dances performed by Shane Mcewan from the Koomurri Aboriginal Centre, located in Katoomba. Shane is originally from Warren, being the son of Sharon Mcewan and Kenny Chatfield. Throughout the day Shane spent time teaching interested students some of his dance movements.

Ricky Powell from the Origin Legends Program spoke about the history of the tent embassy and delivered a powerful, personally composed spiritual prayer seeking understanding and reconciliation.

Then it was on to the fun activities with everyone enjoying a didgeridoo exhibition from WCS teacher Stephen Greenslade, bead making with Banardos, painting with McKillop Rural Community Services, art classes with the Ngemba Wailwan Art Group and face painting with Home start.

Exhibition netball games, including girls versus boys, were organised by Megan Darcy and Trish Darcy-Hutchinson.

Adding to the atmosphere were the stalls manned by organisations including the Womens' Advocacy Group, Sureway Employment, Womens' Health and Child and Family Health.

Uncle Don Dixon and his son David Rose added to the day with their traditional tucker including Johnny Cakes, scones and damper as did the Lions Club BBQ which offered emu and kangaroo sausages.

The organisers were grateful to everyone who contributed to the day, especially Warren Shire Council who funded the festivities through their Community Builders' Grant.

Our Boys Make Country Rugby League Side

The boys were selected at the recent Country Rugby League Championship at Wyong.

NSW Little A's Pay a Visit

Artistic Talent Rewarded

Year 7 student Naomi Cant has been announced as a winner at the regional Sims Metal Waste to Art competition.

Naomi's work, "Tin Dogs" won the High School – 3 Dimensional category in the Warren Shire competition and was sent on to Forbes to participate in the regional final and exhibition where it also won the section.

There were over one hundred and sixty creative works across all the categories on display at the exhibition, received from participants from twenty shires.

The competition aims to challenge people's perceptions about ‘rubbish' and celebrate the reuse and recycling of waste through arts and crafts. Naomi's artistic talent was rewarded with a prize of $300!

Students Compete with Success

A number of our primary school students headed across to Tullamore last Friday to compete at the Gobondery/NARRAF Zone Cross Country Carnival.

All the students enjoyed their day with five achieving outstanding results and progressing on to the Western Region carnival on June 13.

In the 12 Years Girls, Brittaney Darcy-Hutchinson was placed second and Abigail Irving fifth. Hamish Callander was placed 2nd in the 12 Years Boys race.

Max Irving was first in the 11 Years Boys race and Felix Weston close behind in second place.

It's Show Time!

The Warren Show is almost upon us and our students have been busily creating entries for various competitions.

Adding to the sense of anticipation, primary school library classes have been featuring an endearing new Australian book entitled "Show Day."

"It's a beautiful book that I've loved sharing with the children," says teacher librarian, Mrs Whittaker.

"The story follows a family's preparations for an agricultural show with dad making orange marmalade, mum making scones and the children working out what they are going to enter. When show day itself comes around it is full of all the typical highlights such as finding out who won the competitions, visiting the poultry shed, dad entering the wood chopping competition and of course, the rides!

Impact Leadership

Warren Central School's K – 6 prefect body attended the 2012 Impact Student Leadership Conference (ISLC) for primary students in DUBBO on Monday May 7.

The students who attended were Abigail Irving, Jane Carey, Emily Smith, Amy Fogden, Savannah Nielsen, Francois Markgraaff and Hamish Callander.

Here is a recount from one of our captains, Abigail Irving.

On Monday 7 May mum drove Emily and I to the Dubbo RSL for the Impact Leadership Conference. Here we waited for Savannah, Jane, Amy, Hamish and Francois being driven by Mrs Westgarth and they were quite late as they were held up but they finally arrived.

Right on 8.45am the doors opened and students started arriving from all over the place. 9.15 session 1 started called ‘The School Bus Leadership Principles' but before that we had some introductory activities to get us to think "outside the box"! This involved trying to connect 9 dots by using 4 straight lines. This was hard! Then, to make it even harder we had to try and connect 9 dots with just 3 straight lines! It could be done, believe it or not, by thinking outside the box!

Another introductory activity was The Amazing Race. The aim was to get together six people from six different schools, each with a different characteristic, as quickly as possible. This was very challenging!

I enjoyed all the activities but I especially liked the dance sessions at morning tea, lunch and towards the end of the day. The ‘Loud Noises' session was fantastic too as we got to play charades, acting out words like ‘paradise' and ‘frying pan'. How would you act out these words for people to guess?

At the end of the day the question and answer session was very helpful also, answering many students' questions about leadership.

These were just a few of the activities that made a splendid day learning about the qualities that make a good leader. Some of these qualities include: refusing to follow the crowd, encouraging others, doing the right thing and leading by example.

We all made new friends from some of the 250 students who were there.

I would like to say a huge thankyou to Mrs Westgarth for organising the trip and taking us, Mrs Taylor for organising the funding through the Country Areas Program and Mrs Karlene Irving for diving students to the venue.

It was a fantastic day!

A different test

Secondary students undertaking a shearing course are finding the biggest eye opener is the level of fitness required by shearers.

Ten of our secondary students signed up earlier this year for a novice shearing course offered as a TAFE Outreach program one day a week.

"It's been good to have a go at something different," and "everyone is enjoying it although its a bit of a challenge fitness wise," were some of the comments from the students regarding how they were finding the course.

The students are learning about the basics of working in the shearing industry including board work, skirting and wool pressing.

Vocational courses such as this one offer give our students the opportunity to gain exposure to different careers and workplace skills.

Mothers' Day Stall

Past and present servicemen and women were honoured at the school ANZAC Day Service on the first day of Term 1.

Guests included a number of Warren veterans as well as members of the No. 11 Squadron at the Edinburgh RAAF base in South Australia.

After the service the currently serving RAAF visitors spoke to students about their roles in the defence force.

We Took the Science & Engineering Challenge

Students from primary and secondary took part in the Western Plains Science & Engineering Challenge, held in Dubbo last week.

The Challenge is an annual outreach program conducted by the University of Newcastle. It is designed to inspire students to study science or engineering at a senior level by engaging them in various competitive activities of a scientific or engineering nature.

A Standing Ovation for our Students

Our students and a number of volunteer staff did a magnificent job catering for the annual Rotary 9670 District Conference dinner held in Warren over the weekend, receiving a standing ovation and much praise from conference delegates.

This was the first time the event has taken place outside a major city and local Rotarians were keen to ensure delegates had a memorable time visiting Warren.

With her typical "can-do" attitude, our Hospitality teacher, Miss Emma Rice (pictured right) took on the 300 head, 3 course dinner and the result was something our school and town can be proud of.

Carving Totems

The Year 9/10 Visual Art and Photography classes took part in an Aboriginal art workshop run by Ricky Powel recently.

Ricky's focus was on engagement and he achieved this by telling stories about aboriginal totems and the systems that were used around this during traditional times.

Everyone had fun involving themselves in carving totems from aerated concrete blocks.

Supporting the Leukaemia Foundation

Primary students had a fun day last Thursday supporting the Leukaemia Foundation.

Students were encouraged to come to school out of uniform and with "crazy hair"; paying a small fine of a gold coin for the privilege.

The Leukaemia Foundation helps patients living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders including with accommodation and counselling as well as reserach into better treatments and cures.

Swimming Success

A solid summer of training in the pool has paid off handsomely for three of our students.

Matthew Marks and Stephanie Moors of Year 7 and Felix Weston of Year 5 pulled off some fantastic swims at the Western Region carnivals last week.

Matthew was first in the 100m Butterfly and second in the 100m Backstroke, Stephanie third in the 100m Butterfly.

Felix was first in the 11 years 50m Butterfly, second in the 50m Backstroke and third in the 4 x 50m Individual Medley.

What a credit to local coach Wendy Haywood and to the swimmers' own commitment to training. Enjoy the experience of swimming at a state level!

Join the Band

The Country Areas Program is again funding the employment of Mrs Katherine Wilson to tutor the school's concert band and all students, particularly new students, are invited to join the band.

Mrs Wilson also provides private lessons as part of the Outreach program of the Macquarie Conservatorium in Dubbo. Band and private lessons are available on Wednesdays during the school year.

Rachael wins coveted scholarship

2011 Vice Captain and Year 12 student Rachael Cooney has been named as the recipient of the Auscott Undergraduate Scholarship for the Macquarie Valley.

Year 12 students from secondary schools within the Warren and Narromine Shires are eligible to nominate for this prestigious award which is valued at $11,500 per annum.

Rachael is now undertaking a Bachelor of Social Science (Psych) degree.

Manly Warringah Players Visit

NSW Country Rugby League (CRL) representatives were out and about last week visiting country towns to promote rugby league and deliver a positive message about the value of education.

A visit to Warren Central School kicked off the tour with CRL Development Officer, Alex Prout, introducing ex NSWRL player Ronnie Gibbs as well as two young men from the current Manly Warringah stable, Scott Blanch and Liam Higgins to the students.

The message to the students was to set life goals making whatever sacrifices are necessary to achieve them. All of the Manly guests enthusiastically promoted the fact that achieving a good education is an absolute necessity in this day and age. Ronnie has ensured his four children have done so and the young Manly players have done further studies subsequent to finisihing the HSC.

At the end of the session Mr Perry asked the question on everyone's lips, perhaps hoping for a scoop: "What's life like in the club, post ex-coach, Des Hasler?" "Just the same" and "Geoff Toovey is just as good" was the unanimous response from all three. Time will tell!

Ngemba Wailwan Artists Visit

Members of Warren's Ngemba Wailwan Artists Initiative spent some time at Warren Central recently. Students worked with the artists to produce their own interpretations of the ancient totems and symbols created by the Wailwan people.

Distinction for Naomi

Naomi Cant was awarded a Distinction for her work in the Western Region Department of Education and Communities i.xtend program and she recently received her certificate.

Earlier this year Naomi was selected to join sixty other students from fifty schools around the region to tkae part in the enrichment program for talented middle school students.

The twelve week program required Naomi to select and complete six weekly projects for a variety of curriculum areas and undertake one major project; all of which were designed to develop her critical and creative thinking skills.

"I found the tasks really interesting, especially those that involved creative and dramatic skills. I also had to learn to use skills to manage my time to get everything done which is great preparation for high school," commented Naomi.

Cotton Cup Catering

Bringing the Cotton Cup to fruition each year requires a lot of behind the scenes preparation, not the least of which is in the kitchen!

Anyone walking past the Warren Central School Hospitality class room during the three days prior to the Cup weekend might have assumed an episode of Masterchef was being filmed, but in fact the room was a hive of activity as students were busily preparing the food for the Calcutta and Cotton Cup luncheon.

Under the guidance of the school's indefatigable teachers Ms Rice and Mrs Steele, students made cocktail food for 100 at the Calcutta and lunch for 2000 at the races.

125 baguettes were made and sliced, 1000 wraps made, 22kg each of ham and roast beef shaved, 30kg of chicken marinated and sliced, 20kg of eggplant roasted and 18kg of cheese shaved!

It was a massive team effort and our teachers and students are to be congratulated on such a professional job. In the process they not only gained valuable workplace skills; they raised a significant amount of money for their Hospitality facilities and resources.

Tennis Tournament

Eight of our primary school students enjoyed a great day of tennis at the NARRAF/Gobonderry Tennis Tournament in Tottenham last Friday.

Teams from Warren Central, Trangie Central, Tottenham Public, Tullamore Central and Narromine Public played under beautiful conditions for the coveted trophy, which we hoped to retain for another year.

The girls' team comprised Kayla Higgins, Jane Carey, Scarlett Hamblin and Stephanie Moors and the boys', Daniel Stanley, Alec Brown, Hamish Callander and Hugo Weston.

Warren had a margin of one point at the end of the doubles matches and hopes were high for the mixed doubles. Unfortunately Tottenham was able to sneak ahead to become the overall champion school on the day.

"It was great opportunity for our students to experience competition tennis and it was pleasing to see them all give their best," reported Helen Higgins, who attended the day. "I was particularly proud of our students' sportsmanship which was also noted by staff from other schools."

Drama Engages

Drama has an important role to play in the personal development of children; fostering qualities and skills that will be valuable in their adult lives.

It can also be a lot of fun, as students from years 5 and 6 found last week when they had the opportunity to take part in workshops conducted by the Australian Theatre for Young People.

The students had a fantastic time working through theatre games designed to reduce their inhibitions and progressively challenge them to go out of their comfort zones; building confidence in front of an audience.

Barnardos Orana Far West brought the workshops to the school as part of their "Arts in the Dust" program which is funded by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. The program brings artists to rural areas to provide workshops that rural students may not otherwise have the chance to experience due to geographic barriers.

"Through participation in the performing arts we hope to build self esteem and resilience in young people with activities that are stimulating, educational and fun," said Amanda Jefferey, the program co-ordinator.

Draft School Plan available for comment

Bring on the Netball Season!

Our secondary school netball players are eagerly anticipating the 2012 netball season now that their new tunics have arrived at the school.

At previous gala days the girls lamented the fact that they did not have something comparable to all the other teams and our new PE teacher, Mr Le, agreed. With some fundraising from the girls and Mrs Steele, together with Mr Le finding some money in his departmental budget, the girls will now be able to feel like winners before they even hit the court!

Creative Arts Camp

Walking on stilts and learning to use "devil sticks" were just a couple of the highlights for Year 5 students Abigail Irving and Emily Smith at a recent Western NSW Creative Arts Camp.

The girls attended a five day camp at Lake Burrendong with one hundred other Year 5, 6 and 7 students from as far away as Broken Hill, Bourke, Bathurst, Canowindra and Mudgee.

The camp is an annual Department of Education and Communities initiative enabling students who attend to learn from tutors in the areas of dance, drama, music, singing, circus arts, digital media and visual arts.

To add to the fun, the Lake Burrendong staff made sure the students squeezed in some time on outdoor activities as well such as raft making, grass skiing, indoor rock climbing, archery and mountain bike riding. There was no rest at night either with activities such as a talent quest, games night and trivia night. The final night was a thrill with the circus arts tutors performing a spectacular fire show. The camp culminated in a concert for family members for which Emily was chosen to sing a solo and Abigail to play a solo piece on her cornet.

Both girls enjoyed developing their skills and confidence said Di Reichelt, the Regional Arts Co-ordinator for Western Region Schools and she is hoping to see them attend the Western Region Band Camp in 2012.

Hospitality Students Shine

Our hospitality students have established a fantastic reputation in the community, under the guidance of their enthusiastic teacher Miss Rice.

This week a number of them worked at the Anglican Flower Show and this follows on from working at the Sesquicentenary Opening Art Night, a rodeo and the Showgirl Dinner, to name a few of the functions in which they've participated.

The benefits of this work are numerous. The students gain valuable hands-on experience; at times donate their time to the community groups for which they volunteer and at other times, raise money from their work to go into purchasing equipment for the classroom.

On all occasions the feedback the school has received on the level of service provided and attitude of the students has been outstanding and we are very proud of them.

A week of farewell activities for the class of 2011 culminated with a graduation assembly on the last Thursday of Term 3. Farewell events included staff versus students table tennis matches, fundraising (raffles, car washes, a cake stall, an auction of teachers) as well as their formal dinner held the previous evening.

We thank this fine group of young people for everything they have contributed to our school over the years and wish them all the best in the HSC. They are to be especially thanked for devoting their time and energy throughout the year towards raising money for their chosen charity; the Red Cross Breakfast Club at the school. The grand total of their efforts was $1275.

Prior to the farewell dinner official photographs were taken of the students in the woolshed at "Gillendoon", the property of Mr and Mrs Tony Walker. Premier's Spelling Bee State Finalist

Year 6 student Arielle Irving was the winner in the senior primary final (years 5 & 6) of the Western Region Premier's Spelling Bee Finals held in Dubbo recently.

This year there were a record 115,000 students involved in the junior (years 3 & 4) and senior competitions, with over 3000 students from 807 public schools competing at 39 regional finals across NSW.

In the Western Region Junior Final Felix Weston of Year 4 made it to the top five students.

Arielle will now compete at the State Final on November 16 and it will be broadcast live on ABC radio.

Jazz Gives a Buzz

K - 8 students at Warren Central enjoyed another musical treat last Monday when Sydney band "The World According to James" popped in for a visit.

The cool sounds of jazz emanated from the school hall, led by Australia's leading jazz trombonist the affable James Greening.

James and the other members of the quartet captivated students with their very engaging personalities and interactive performance. The students thoroughly enjoyed listening to the jazz, learning about musical concepts and the roles of their different instruments in making a jazz sound. There was also much fun when the students leapt to their feet to dance a tango!

Warren Central students' participation in this Musica Viva program was generously subsidised by the Country Areas Program.

Stephanie off to State

Stephanie Moors of Year 6 ran a fantastic 100m final at the Western Region Primary School Athletics Championships and came first!

This means that Stephanie will now be part of the Western Region team at the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association Athletics Championships in mid October.

This is the second time Stephanie has competed at state level this year; she was part of the contingent from Warren at the state swimming championships earlier in the year.

Warren Central was proud to hear that two of our students were singled out for special mention at the recent Gobondery/NARRAF Athletics Carnival. Felix Weston of Year 4 was named Junior Boy Champion and Jane Carey of Year 5 was Runner-Up 11 Year Old Girl Champion.

All our students enjoyed a great day of competition and gave their all to their events. Of particular note was the way everyone who competed in relays worked extra hard for their teams. Our Senior Boys Relay team came second and will compete at the Western Region Carnival. Unfortunately although our Junior Boys Relay team came first they were not able to find four runners and required a substitute from another school.

There were a number of outstanding results from our students on the day but unfortunately only the top two placegetters will progress to the Western Region Athletics Carnival.

A Day of Celebration

Every year NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) events are held throughout the country to celebrate and create an awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. At Warren Central School this year NAIDOC Day began with the raising of the Aboriginal flag by Paige and Olivia Shepherd, followed by a Welcome to Country delivered by Will Day.

An exciting morning of traditional games kept the primary school and preschool students busy, led by special guest for the day, Rick Powell. Rick told stories and sang songs then led the students through a range of games that were based on traditional activities of Aboriginal children. Mrs Evelyn Barker, the Western Region Red Cross Co-ordinator also dropped in and shared a story from her own childhood about how they used to catch fish in Brewarrina. A demonstration of boomerang throwing accompanied an analogy Rick told about how we get back in life according to what we give out.

After a community BBQ lunch provided by the Warren Aboriginal Lands Council, secondary students.

Another memorable musical experience was enjoyed by students from the entire school last week, this time presented by talented singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist, Colin Offord.

Described by the Sydney Morning Herald as a 'national musical treasure', Colin delivered a unique performance that had the students enthralled. Great Engineering Challenge

Rebecca Murray, Taylor McKloskey, Sam Cleasby and Ty Arnold gained an exposure to the challenges of engineering when they attended The Great Engineering Challenge in Dubbo with their Science teacher, Selween Chandra recently.

Sponsored by the Roads and Traffic Authority and run in conjunction with Engineers Australia, the day required the students to solve three real life engineering challenges utilising math and science skills.

The aim of the day was to promote an awareness of engineering as a career choice for students and it was only the second year that the event has been offered to students outside Sydney.

Biology Excursion

The Evolution of Australian Biota is a Year 11 Biology subject worthy of some hands-on investigation and students travelled to the Western Plains Zoo recently to do just that.

A tailored program was facilitated by the Taronga Western Plains Zoo Education Centre, the Australian Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens that enabled the students to examine fossils, see a range of Australian animals and have a close look at the rare Wollami Pine.

They also had a look at mechanisms for flora pollination, seed dispersal and asexual reproduction found in local examples of Australian flora.

"This was well worth the trip to Dubbo as opportunities for the students to engage with specialists really helps them gain a much deeper understanding of course content," commented Science teacher, Selween Chandra.

The NSW Department of Education says that individual schools are responsible for developing their own mobile phone protocols. Warren Central School will hold a forum at the next P&C meeting where parents can share their thoughts regarding the protocol to be adopted for the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices by students during school hours.

The theme for this year's Book Week was "One World Many Stories" and it was great to see so many students dressed in characters from an array of great books from around the world.

Canadian principal visits

Warren Central School recently hosted a three day visit from Canadian school principal Mrs Melissa Nantais, as part of the Canadian/Australian program "Leading Educators around the Planet" (LEAP). The program facilitates professional development opportunities for principals in both countries.

Mrs Nantais is the principal of the Vincent Massey Secondary School in Windsor, Ontario, and was billeted by WCS principal, William White. In addition to spending time with the staff at Warren Central she also spent time at educational conferences in Sydney.

Vincent Massey Secondary School has 1600 students in years 9 – 12 , compared to the 264 K – 12 students at Warren Central.

"We are a large school with a diverse student population and I am really proud of the fact that our school is a real microcosm of the community. English is not the first language spoken at home for thirty percent of our students. Enrolment is open to anyone within our district however we also offer an enrichment pathway to which students outside our district can apply. We also offer pathways for students with disabilities and for those seeking to undertake subjects similar to Warren Central's Life Skills program."

Mrs Nantais spent her time visiting classrooms, speaking with students, sitting in on meetings with parents and staff and learning how the staff works together at Warren Central. She was most impressed by the level of technology supporting learning in the classrooms at Warren Central, in particular the smartboards in every classroom.

Canada has not gone down the same path as Australia with the number of standardised tests students must sit from years 3 to 12.

"Our students sit standardised tests in reading, writing and mathematics in years 3 and 6 then they are tested for math in year 9 and literacy in year 10. There is no equivalent of the Higher School Certificate and no ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) for selection into university, rather, universities look at results in subjects relevant to the course for which they are applying. Students earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma."

"Another difference in the systems is that students have to stay at school until they are 18, whereas I believe in NSW students have to either be in school, an approved educational institution, full time employment or a combination of both until they are 17."

Whilst in Australia Mrs Nantais is adding to her research in the area of how leadership can be developed in schools.

"Traditionally leadership is thought of as being attached to the principal of a school but schools need collective responsibility - department heads and teachers need to feel empowered to work together to lead the changes necessary to improve learning outcomes. This is particularly important as the formal leader of a school can change regularly. I am interested in observing models of leadership creation at work in other educational systems," said Mrs Nantais.

After her time in Warren and Sydney Mrs Nantais and her husband were off to take in the sights of Uluru and the area around Cairns before returning home to begin the new Canadian school year.

Mr White will be paying a reciprocal visit to Mrs Nantais' school in the next NSW school holidays.

School holiday adventure

When our dedicated primary school teacher Mrs Felicity Richardson proposed a school holiday adventure to the snow for students in years 5 and 6, six excited students and one mother took up the generous offer.

Hamish Callender, Alec Brown, Abigail Irving, Tristan Gale, James Gough, Ben Fisk and his mother Narelle all headed off to the Department of Sport and Recreation's camp at Lake Jindabyne for a jam packed week of skiing and other exciting outdoor activities.

Besides learning to ski with a qualified instructor, the children enjoyed indoor rock climbing, a leadership initiatives and ropes course, outdoor cook outs and riding green machines, (a cross between a go-kart and a bicycle).

As none of the children had visited snow fields before the skiing was the real highlight for them.

"The whole experience was fantastic for all of us," said Felicity. "It was a really well-organised camp and it was so rewarding for Narelle and I to see the children embracing new experiences and challenges and growing their interpersonal skills."

Ben's a Winner!

Year 6 prefect, Ben Fisk, has been named regional winner in the Netwaste, Waste 2 Art, Primary School 3 Dimensional Art competition.

Ben is to be applauded for finding the time at home to support this worthy competition which encourages everyone to think about what we normally see as rubbish in a different way. After coming up with his idea, Ben rummaged through the shed to look for objects he could recycle to create his work of art. The finished product, entitled "Three Wise Owls" uses forks, a broken mirror, shower heads, tin lids and grinder blades.

In addition to the prestige gained from winning this competition, Ben won $200.

Ben currently plays rugby union for Western Force in the international Super 14 competition and played for Australia in the 2010 Tri-Nations Competition. After a chat with the students he put some of the boys through their paces, offering training and playing tips.

Former Kangaroo and NRL legend, Nathan Blacklock, paid a return visit to our school recently to co-deliver a workshop to improve awareness about domestic violence.

Nathan is one of a number of high profile rugby league players supporting the NSW Government initiative, "Let's Tackle Domestic Violence."

Also delivering the workshop to secondary students was Dixie Link-Gordon of the Mudgin-Gal Aboriginal Women's Centre in Redfern and mother of Penrith Panthers player Yileen "Buddy" Gordon.

The students heard about the different forms of domestic violence, warning signs, impacts, how to get help and the possible consequences when bystanders turn a blind eye to incidents.

‘Sexting' is the sending of provocative or sexually explicit photos, messages or videos usually by mobile phone. These images can also end up online on sites such as Facebook or YouTube. While seemingly innocent or flirtatious, sexting can have serious social and legal consequences for children.

How Important is Sleep?

When children sleep well, they're more settled, happy and ready for school the next day. Getting enough sleep strengthens their immune systems and could reduce the risk of infection and illness.

Experts believe primary school children require around 10-12 hours of sleep per night and up to half of all children and adolescents experience some problem with getting enough sleep. You can help your child to develop healthy sleep habits including:

· set bedtimes and wake times - try and keep these regular

· no TV/computer games one hour before bed

· no TVs in bedrooms

· no caffeine, high sugar or high spicy food 3-4 hours before bed

· comfortable temperature, light and noise levels in the bedroom

· warm milk or camomile tea can help induce sleep

· convincing children that it is important to sleep well - reward them for complying with bedtime rules

· visiting your doctor and asking to be referred to a sleep specialist if your child's sleep problems persist or worsen.

Warren's 150th Birthday

What a fantastic weekend!

Staff and students made a wonderful contribution to Warren's sesquicentenary celebrations, under the guidance of our indefatigable library assistant, Mrs Ridley.

Students from the SRC did a great job decorating the float for the street parade which featured Ms Reeves as a teacher from the early 20th century and Mrs Steele as one from the early 21st century. It was a wonderful sight, as were our maypole dancers who kicked off the proceedings at Victoria Park.

In the afternoon the children in attendance enjoyed participating in old fashioned games like the three legged race, under the supervision of a number of our staff.

Impact Leadership

On Friday 13 May the eight K – 6 prefects (Hugo, Arielle, Daniel, Ben, Scarlett, James, Kayla, Naomi) all woke up for a cold and icy 4.30am start. We arrived in Bathurst at 9.00am eager to start the day after the long trip.

Approximately 200 students from across the central west were packed into the Bathurst Entertainment Centre for the Student Leadership Conference that we were attending. We had travelled the furthest distance out of all the schools.

Our first presenters, Mason and Andy, started us off with a fun game to get us energized before the first session of the day.

Over the course of the day we took part in many different activities that included:

· Meeting other students

· Working out how to be better school leaders

· Improving our public speaking skills

· Investigating who the public leader was in different situations that we were given

We also learnt the high 5 leadership principles:

1. Careful thinking with a view to action

2. Prioritise your time

3. Involve others

4. Recover from setbacks

5. Generosity towards others

The day was not just about being a better school leader but also about taking leadership in different situations in our lives, not just at school.

Overall we had a very informative and enjoyable day and learnt a great deal about leadership so we can be better leaders of our school and in future years.

The prefects would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Fisk and Mrs Westgarth for giving up their time, as well as their sleep, to take us to Bathurst.

Warren Central hosted the Western Region Secondary Principals Council for two days in early May.

The group meets once a terms to discuss areas of common interest.

Besides working through the items on their agenda the principals were able to enjoy a beautiful breakfast, courtesy of Miss Rice and her Hospitality students. They also injected funds into the local economy with accommodation, dinner and, for the ladies, an after school visit to Weigela Design!

Western Region U/ 15's League

Craig Field, Will Day, Thomas Field and Blake Gale, have been selected to be part of the Western Region Under 15's Rugby League team and are heading to Coonabarabran this week to play the North West team.

To make this team the boys have been through two selection rounds.

The first, the Western Zone Trials, was where the boys played against schools west of Wellington to Gilgandra in the north; and Parks, Forbes, West Wyalong etc in the South West.

After this event our boys were selected to be part of a Western Zone team which played the Eastern Zone team at the Area Trials at Peak Hill back in early April. From here a squad of fifteen was formed to play the North West Region team at Coonabarabran this Friday.

Positions in the Greater Western Region team will be announced after this and if our boys are selected they will be off to Toronto at the end of May to play regional and Sydney teams from around the State with the ultimate aim of making the NSW Combined High Schools team! Good luck boys!

NAPLAN INFORMATION

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008.

On Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May, students will undertake the 2011 NAPLAN tests.

NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four domains of Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.

NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how individual students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children.

All students are encouraged to participate in the tests. Students with disability may qualify for special provisions that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom.

An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child's results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available at www.naplan.edu.au"

ANZAC Day Commemorated

The courage, endurance and mateship of all Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women was acknowledged at the school's annual ANZAC Day Service on the last day of Term 1.

We hope to see as many students as possible represent our school at the town's ANZAC Day Service on 25 April to pay further tribute to bravery and selflessness of past and present servicemen and women.

Students should be in full school uniform, including black shoes, and meet near the United Services Club between 10:30 and 10:45am.

Jessica Wins Poetry Competition

Congratulations to Year 11 student, Jessica Clark, whose flair for poetry has resulted in her winning the Principal's Poetry Competition and the prize of a family pass to Taronga Western Plains Zoo, valued at $109.

Jessica is a prolific reader and writer and hopes to study English Literature at University.

"I am pleased to see Jessica's passion for poetry rewarded," commented Mr White.

Due to the high calibre of entries the judges decided to award a Runner Up Award to Arielle Irving (Year 6) and Highly Commended Awards to Taylor McCloskey (Year 10), Emily Glover (Year 7), Scarlett Hamblin (Year 6), Benjamin Fisk (Year 6), Hugo Weston (Year 6) and Savannah Nielsen (Year 5).

The primary school SRC kindly donated $5 canteen vouchers for the Runner Up and the Highly Commended awards.

Science & Engineering Challenge

The annual Western Plains Science & Engineering Challenge was held in Dubbo recently and eighteen students from Years 5 and 6 were selected to represent our school.

Our students relished the opportunity to take part in fun, practical activities that required them to use ingenuity and teamwork. Activities included:

constructing a catapult to launch tennis balls
constructing a vehicle to transverse an undulating surface whilst carrying an unstable load
designing and building a model hand that would work in a biologically similar way to a human hand
attaching a propeller or fan to drive a vehicle along rails
using a board to simulate power distribution then using cables to make loads operate efficiently
designing a system using hoses, valves and calibrated containers to deliver water at a pre-determined rate from upper reservoirs to a lower target.

The Challenge is presented by the University of Newcastle in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of Dubbo and Narromine as well as Dubbo Rotaract and aims to stimulate in students an interest in the fields of science, technology and engineering.

Arielle in Burke's Backyard

Arielle Irving has won a $500 gift voucher for our school library and is looking forward to helping to choose some fantastic new books for the shelves.

The Year 6 student submitted an entry to the Burke's Backyard magazine to be a Kids' Editor by outlining what she would write about and why she would be able to do the job.

She was notified that she had been selected late last year and the April edition of the magazine features the stories she wrote.

Two Year 6 students, Stephanie Moors and Hugo Weston were thrilled to be finalists at the Primary Schools Sports Association Swimming Championships held recently in Sydney.

Up against students from public, Catholic and independent schools they both made it through to their 13 Years 50m Freestyle finals. In what were very exciting races for their Warren supporters, both swam hard to secure fourth places in their races.

A fantastic effort and a great reward for all their hard work with local coach Wendy Haywood.

Year 4 students Felix Weston and Max Irving also competed in a number of races and were pleased to achieve a number of personal bests.

Biology Excursion

Year 11 Biology students recently enjoyed the opportunity to get out of the classroom and have a close look at a local terrestrial ecosystem.

Mr Chandra guided the students' observations of abiotic (non living) and biotic (living) factors that affect the environment they visited and the students made use of equipment such as a pH pen meter, turbidity tube and lux meter.

Transects and quadrat methods as well as other theoretical concepts were put into practice during the field work.

Mind Challenge Workshops

Find out about these two day courses which are designed to enrich and stimulate childrens' understandings in a range of subjects and interests. Quite a few Warren Central students have attended these workshops over the past five years and found them very rewarding.

Semester 1 workshops will be held on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May in Dubbo.

Helmet Artwork Competition

Bicycle NSW is asking students to create the artwork for a new bicycle helmet!

A winner from each region of NSW will receive a bicycle and helment. The overall winner will have their design used on a limited edition helmet that will be available Australia wide!

State Swim Carnival Bound

A number of Warren Central primary school students travelled to Dubbo recently to compete in the Western School Sports Association's Swimming Trials.

In what is a great credit to the skills of local coach Wendy Haywood, four of the students were successful in gaining places to attend the NSW PSSA State Carnival to be held at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre on March 28 and 29. They will be competing against students from other NSW public school regions as well as from Catholic and independent schools.

The students are:

2nd - 10 years and Under 50m Breaststroke, 2nd - 10 years and Under 50m Backstroke, 2nd - 10 years and Under 50m Butterfly, 2nd - 10 years and Under 200m Individual Medley

Did you know that the NSW Government is offering NSW primary school children free access to cultural institutions in NSW until April 26? The Kids' Adventure Passport allows access to 71 museums, galleries and art centres across the state such as:

Maitland Regional Art Gallery
Powerhouse Museum
Don Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame.

School Holiday Activities

The NSW Government has also launched the GoPlay website with information on school holiday activities for families. It looks like it is still in development but might be worth visiting regularly as more content will be posted over time.

New Laptops for Year 9 Students

Year 9 students received their new laptops recently as part of the Federal Government's Digital Education Revolution program.

The program aims to expand students' learning possibilities in each of the key learning areas of the curriculum and to improve access to technology for students in all public schools.

The laptops are custom made and are about three quarters of the size of a regular laptop so they easily fit into students' bags. They come loaded with about $5,500 worth of all the software commonly found in the modern workplace.

Poetry Competition Closes Soon

Entries for Mr White's poetry competition close this Friday. Remember, the prize is a trip to the Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo, for the whole family (2 adults and 2 children only, value $109).

Topic

All students from Kindergarten to Year 12 are asked to submit a poem on the theme of endangered animals.

Closing Date

Entries must received in the box located in the Front Office by March 25. Please include your name and class on the BACK of the poem. Remember to keep a photocopy of the poem for yourself.

Swim Team Success

Congratulations to our primary school swimming team who won Gobondery/NARRAF zone carnival recently, at the Warren War Memorial Pool. Participating schools were: Warren Central, Narromine Public, Trangie Central, Yeoval Cental, Tullamore Central, Tottenham Central, Trundle Central and Peak Hill Central. Tottenham came a close second and Narromine, third.

Presentation Night for 2010

Students, staff and families gathered in the J B Renshaw Hall to celebrate the achievements of 2010 on Wednesday evening, 23 February. The Presentation Night was postponed from December last year due to the flooding.

2011 Swimming Carnival

The 2011 swimming carnival was enjoyed by all with Mitchell House the winners on the night. There were some great swims and fantastic war cries! The house swim was a fun way to end the night for everyone. See the photo album for more photos.
